23 Oct Iberia and Getting Greener install new self-consumption power plants in La Muñoza to save 2.63 million kWh per year
- The energy produced with these panels during their lifetime will be equivalent to the average consumption of more than 3,500 households.
- Getting Greener has installed the photovoltaic plants for self-consumption in the test bench, the service center, and Hangar 6.
- In 2021, Iberia and Getting Greener started operating the largest self-consumption plant of the Ibex in La Muñoza, installing solar panels in the engine shop.
- With the energy produced both in the engine shop plant and in these last three plants, Iberia covers 12.5% of the energy consumed annually at the La Muñoza facilities, which is equivalent to 5.4 million kWh per year.
- This initiative is part of Iberia’s environmental sustainability strategy, which is structured in seven pillars, including the use of renewable energy in all facilities.
Iberia is accelerating the implementation of its sustainability strategy at its La Muñoza complex, where Iberia Maintenance facilities are located. The airline, together with Getting Greener, a company that manages energy efficiency and renewable generation assets, has just started up three photovoltaic plants for self-consumption at three Iberia Maintenance facilities: the engine test bench, the service center, and Hangar 6.
The total capacity of these three new plants is 2.63 megawatts of installed power, which will avoid the emission of more than 13,600 tons of CO2 over their useful life, estimated at 25 years, equivalent to the consumption of more than 3,500 households during that period*. These plants are in addition to the one installed on the roof of the engine shop, which will have a similar capacity (2.73 million kWh per year) in 2021.
Currently, La Muñoza’s electricity consumption is 43 million kilowatts per year, of which 5.4 million kWh are covered by the photovoltaic panels already installed, representing about 12.5% of the energy consumed.
Iberia Sustainability strategy
The installation of solar panels at La Muñoza is part of Iberia’s sustainability strategy, which is structured in seven pillars:
- Fleet renewal: Iberia is adding the most efficient, advanced, and quietest Airbus A350 and A320neo aircraft on the market to its fleet.
- Operational fuel efficiency measures: to optimize fuel consumption during all phases of flight.
- Sustainable management of waste generated on board: such as the replacement of on-board newspapers in paper format with digital ones or the reduction in the use of plastics.
- Digitalization: to reduce the weight carried on board the aircraft and, therefore, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
- Use of sustainable aviation fuels: Iberia, as part of the IAG group, has committed to operating 10% of its flights with sustainable aviation fuel by 2030.
- Renewable electricity in all facilities.
- More efficient and responsible lighting in our hangars.
